UNDERSTANDING TACAN: HOW TACTICAL AIR NAVIGATION SYSTEMS WORK

TACAN (Tactical Air Navigation system) is a navigation system primarily used by military aircraft. The aim of a TACAN is to provide the aircraft with bearing and distance to a ground-based station. The operation of a TACAN can be likened to that of a DVOR/DME system that provides range and bearing information for civil aviation.

Civil aviation aircraft with a DME receiver are able to receive the range information from a TACAN provided the TACAN is appropriately identified within the aircraft’s database. The aircraft however will not see the bearing information from the TACAN because the TACAN operates in the UHF band whereas the DVOR operates at VHF.
